Battery life is non-negotiable. Long campus days plus video calls, video lectures, and library all-nighters mean 14+ hours of real-world battery is the floor. Anything advertised as "10 hours" delivers about 6 in actual student use. Apple and Snapdragon X chips genuinely deliver the 18-24 hour numbers in their spec sheets; older Intel laptops do not.
Weight and build matter. Backpack life is brutal. Plastic chassis with flex around the trackpad start showing screen issues by year two. Aluminum, magnesium, or carbon-fiber bodies survive four years. All four picks above are metal-bodied.
